0. Introduction

a) Below is one comparison of twenty-three major Bible translations. Listed with each version is the text basis translators used for the Old and New Testaments, what technique they used to translate, and background information about the version.

1. Translation (Date originally published, abbreviation)

a) New Jerusalem Bible (1985, NJB)

Text basis for O. T. :  Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia with Septuagint influence.

Text basis for Apocrypha:  Septuagint with Vulgate influence.

Text basis for N. T. :  Novum Testamentum Graece 25th ed. with occasional parallels to Codex Bezae.

Technique used:  Dynamic Equivalence

Published by:  Darton, Longman & Todd and Les Editions du Cerf.

b) The NJB was created by the Roman Catholic Church. It is an updated version of the JB, which was an English version of a French version known as La Bible de Jérusalem. Like the JB, the NJB translates God's name in the Old Testament (the Tetragrammaton) as Yahweh.
