HEALING ANOINTING
0. Introduction
a) 'Healing anointing' is an anointing (Spirit given power) that mends, cures, makes whole so that we return to the original state of health.
i) 7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NIV)
1. Who heals?
a) The Lord Jesus Christ heals
i) 26He said, "If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you." (Exodus 15:26 NIV)
ii) 2Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— 3who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, (Psalm 103:2, 3 NIV)
2. What areas in our lives do we need healing?
a) When we have sin
i) 14... if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV)
ii) 4I said, "Have mercy on me, Lord; heal me, for I have sinned against you." (Psalm 41:4 NIV)
b) When we have sickness and disease
i) 7As you go, proclaim this message: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. (Matthew 10:7, 8 NIV)
ii) 17One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. (Luke 5:17 NIV)
iii) 2praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— 3who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, (Psalm 103:2, 3 NIV)
c) When we have been brokenhearted and wounded
i) 3He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3 NIV)
d) When we have been backsliding
i) 22"Return, faithless people; I will cure you of backsliding." "Yes, we will come to you, for you are the Lord our God. (Jeremiah 3:22 NIV)
3. What are the gifts of healing?
a) 7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NIV)
b) 27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way. (1 Corinthians 12:27-31 NIV)
i) The gifts of healing are for the supernatural healing of diseases and infirmities without natural means of any sort. They are the miraculous manifestation of the Spirit for the banishment of all human ills whether acute or chronic.
ii) There are many, not one, as is generally supposed. A believer possessing one or more of them will be used of God in certain cases of sickness but not necessarily in others. Some have great success in cases of blindness; some in deafness; some in cancers; some in internal disorders etc.
iii) The gifts may operate in touch or a word. In exceptional cases healing may result without touch or word but by the very presence of one possessing it.
4. What causes healing?
a) Faith
i) Substitution faith where the sick is too feeble to believe himself
@1. Jesus heals the paralytic
1A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven." (Mark 2:1-5 NIV)
10But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the man, 11"I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." 12He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!" (Mark 2:10-12 NIV)
ii) Faith of the sufferer alone
@1. A sick woman
20Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed." 22Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed at that moment. (Matthew 9:20-22 NIV)
@2. A crippled man
8In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. 9He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10and called out, "Stand up on your feet!" At that, the man jumped up and began to walk. (Acts 14:8-10 NIV)
iii) Faith of the minister alone in special circumstances such as coma or unconsciousness (dead)
@1. A dead girl
18While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, "My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live." 19Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. (Matthew 9:18, 19 NIV)
23When Jesus entered the synagogue leader's house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, 24he said, "Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep." But they laughed at him. 25After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. (Matthew 9:23-25 NIV)
iv) Combined faith of sufferer and minister
@1. Jesus heals the blind
27As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 28When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"
"Yes, Lord," they replied. 29Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith let it be done to you"; 30and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, "See that no one knows about this." 31But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region. (Matthew 9:27-31 NIV)
b) Prayer and confessing of sin to one another
i) 14Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (James 5:14-16 NIV)
c) Wounds (stripes) of Jesus
i) 5But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 NIV)
ii) 24"He himself bore our sins" in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; "by his wounds you have been healed." (1 Peter 2:24 NIV)
d) The name of Jesus Christ
i) 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! 9If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. (Acts 4:8-10 NIV)
5. What must we do when we are healed?
a) Give praise to God
i) 10 healed of leprosy
11Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" 14When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed. 15One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17Jesus asked, Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?" 19Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." (Luke 17:11-19 NIV)
b) Testify
i) 11They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death. (Revelation 12:11 NIV)
6. Prayer focus
a) Pray and ask God to forgive our sins.
