BIBLE PEOPLE | MATTHIAS, THE APOSTLE

1. Bible People

a) The Bible is an historic record of real people and places.

b) Here is a brief biography of such a person during Bible times.

2. Matthias, the Apostle

a) Matthias was chosen to become the 12th Apostle after the death of Judas. In Acts, chapter 1, Peter explains to about 120 followers the need to replace Judas, as he recites a Psalm of David that states "Let his work be given to someone else to do," in reference to Judas.

b) Two men are nominated by the assembly, Joseph Justus, who was also called Barsabbas, and Matthias. The assembly prayed to God to make the right choice, and Matthias was chosen. Nothing more is written of him in the Bible.

c) Tradition states he was one of the 70 sent out by Jesus in Luke 10:1, that he preached in Judea, and that he died a martyr. Matthias means "Gift of God."

  1. Was Matthias or Paul God's choice to replace Judas as the 12th apostle?

    I love the hymn based on Acts 1:26,

    [Act 1:26] Praise To The Heavenly Wisdom
    Praise to the Heavenly Wisdom
    Who knows the hearts of all—
    The saintly life’s beginnings,
    The traitor’s secret fall;
    Our own ascended Master,
    Who heard His Church’s cry,
    Made known His guiding presence,
    And ruled her from on high.

    Elect in His foreknowledge,
    To fill the lost one’s place;
    He formed His chosen vessel
    By hidden gifts of grace;
    Then, by the lot’s disposing,
    He lifted up the poor,
    And set him with the princes
    On high for evermore.

    Still guide Thy Church, Chief Shepherd,
    Her losses still renew;
    Be Thy dread keys entrusted
    To faithful hands and true;
    Apostles of Thy choosing
    May all her rulers be,
    That each with joy may render
    His last account to Thee!
