AUTHORITY | GOD'S COMMANDS (2)

1. Bible Study

a) The Bible tells the story of how God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — loves us and wants us to love Him, despite our brokenness and tendency to go our own way (Isaiah 53:6). This relationship is the “main thing” about the Bible and it’s the “main thing” to keep focused on.

b) God's Word is fully sufficient to prepare us for everything the Bible commands us to do. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to transform us into Christ-likeness.

c) We study to understand God's character and attributes. Study the Bible anytime, anywhere. Each topic is ideal for personal learning but may also be adapted for a group as well.

2. Authority: God's Commands

a) Noah and the ark illustrate God's two types of commands - specific and unspecific (Genesis 6:14-23).

b) Specific aspects of the command: ark, gopherwood, rooms, cover inside and outside with pitch (Genesis 6:14); length, width, height (Genesis 6:15); window finished to a cubit, door in the side, three decks (Genesis 6:16); take food for people and animals (Genesis 6:21).

c) Unspecific aspects of the command: make, size of rooms, formula to produce the pitch (Genesis 6:14); the exact size of the window, which side the door was to go in, the height between decks (Genesis 6:16); what kind and how much food (Genesis 6:21).

d) Noah had to: employ the specifics of God's command, make lawful choices (i.e., employ lawful expediencies) to fulfill the unspecific aspects of God's command, and obey by faith.

i) Hebrews 11:7

7 By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
