The Warning That Still Echoes

The apostle Paul issued a warning that echoes across the centuries with urgent relevance. In 2 Corinthians 11:4, he expresses his concern that believers might be led astray by those who proclaim "another Jesus," a different spirit, or a different gospel. Paul's words reveal a sobering reality: it is possible to hear the name of Jesus, to speak of Him, and even to claim to follow Him, while actually embracing a version of Him that is not the Jesus of Scripture. This is not a minor theological disagreement; it is a matter of eternal significance. The Jesus we believe in shapes everything—our salvation, our hope, our understanding of God, and our destiny. If we follow another Jesus, we have a different spirit and a different gospel, and we are not truly saved.

The Heresies That Distort the Truth

Throughout history, various organizations and movements have claimed to be Christian while preaching another Jesus. Some teach that Jesus Christ is Michael the Archangel, reducing the Son of God to a created being. Others separate Jesus from Christ, claiming that Jesus was merely a man and that Christ was an ideal or a divine principle that descended upon Him. Some teach that Jesus is the first of many spirit children of Elohim, denying His unique and eternal sonship. Others present Jesus as a cosmic Santa Claus whose purpose is to provide health and financial prosperity on demand, reducing the Lord of glory to a divine vending machine. Still others teach that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was not sufficient to save us from all our sins, requiring additional purification through purgatory. These are not minor variations; they are fundamental distortions of the truth. They present a Jesus who is not the Jesus of Scripture, and they offer a salvation that is not the salvation of the Gospel.

The Jesus of Other Religions

There are also organizations that do not claim to be Christian but still speak of Jesus. Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet, but not the Son of God, and denies His crucifixion and resurrection. Other religions regard Jesus as a teacher or master, a wise man who showed a path to enlightenment, but not the Savior of the world. The Jesus of these traditions is not the Jesus of the Bible. He is a diminished figure, a human teacher, a noble prophet, but not the incarnate Word, not the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, not the risen Lord seated at the right hand of the Father. To follow this Jesus is to follow another Jesus, and to follow another Jesus is to have no salvation.

Who Is the Real Jesus?

The Bible reveals the true Jesus with unmistakable clarity. He is God who took on human flesh. John 1:14 declares that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. He was born of a virgin, conceived by the Holy Spirit, and called holy—the Son of God. He is the one and only begotten Son of God, not a created being, not an adopted son, but the eternal Son who is one with the Father. He alone can save us from our sins. Acts 4:12 declares that there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. He is alive and Lord over all things. Ephesians 1:20-23 describes Him as raised from the dead and seated at the right hand of God, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. This is the Jesus of Scripture. This is the Jesus we must believe in.

The Jesus of the Apostles

The apostle Paul was inspired to warn against those who preach another Jesus. Paul did not preach a Jesus of convenience, a Jesus of prosperity, or a Jesus of human philosophy. He preached the Jesus who was crucified for our sins, buried, and raised on the third day. He preached the Jesus who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, the head of the church, the one in whom all the fullness of God dwells bodily. He preached the Jesus who will return to judge the living and the dead. This is the Jesus that Paul proclaimed, and this is the Jesus we must proclaim. To deviate from this is to preach another Jesus, and to preach another Jesus is to preach a different gospel.

The Call to Examine

Are you preaching another Jesus? You may need to check against the apostle Paul's writings, for he is the one inspired to write this very warning. Examine your beliefs. Examine the teachings you receive. Examine the Jesus you proclaim. Does He align with the Jesus of Scripture? Is He fully God and fully man? Is He the only way of salvation? Is His sacrifice sufficient for all your sins? Is He risen and reigning? If your Jesus is less than this, if your Jesus is different from this, you are following another Jesus. And to follow another Jesus is to have no hope of salvation.

The Call to Be Lights in the World

Daniel 12:3 declares that those who teach righteousness will shine like the brightness of the heavens. Philippians 2:15 calls us to prove ourselves blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom we appear as lights in the world. This is our calling. We are to shine the light of the true Jesus in a world that is surrounded by counterfeits. We are to proclaim the Jesus of Scripture with boldness and clarity. We are to expose the false teachings that lead people astray. And we are to hold fast to the truth, knowing that the Jesus we proclaim is the only hope for salvation.

Final Reflection

There is only one Jesus. He is not Michael the Archangel. He is not a human teacher. He is not a prophet who died and stayed dead. He is the eternal Son of God, born of a virgin, crucified for our sins, risen from the dead, and seated at the right hand of the Father. He is the only way to God, the only name by which we can be saved, and the only hope for eternal life. Do not be led astray by another Jesus. Test everything against the Word of God. Hold fast to the truth. And proclaim the true Jesus to a world that desperately needs to know Him.

Prayer for Truth and Discernment

Lord, protect me from being led astray by another Jesus. Open my eyes to the truth of Your Word. Help me to recognize the counterfeit and to hold fast to the genuine. Let me proclaim the Jesus of Scripture—the eternal Son, the crucified Savior, the risen Lord. Protect Your church from false teachers and false gospels. Let us be lights in the world, shining the truth of the true Jesus to those who are lost. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
