UNSAFE WORD: SHAME
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Many a time we use and speak word so easily without thinking much of whether such word is correct to use in our daily conversation. We treat it lightly. Word such as "LUCK" is not found in the Bible and yet we often use it.
b) Why is it so necessary to learn to use and speak the correct word? Matthew 12:36-37 has a lot to say about it.
i) 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36-37 NKJV)
c) We will have to give an account of ourselves (Romans 14:12), every idle (careless, empty, thoughtless, worthless) word we speak (Matthew 12:36) and every work (deed) including every secret (hidden) thing whether good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:14) in the day of judgment. For that reason, it compels us to use and speak the correct word or words especially God's Word. It's safe to use and we can learn a lot from its intended meaning.
d) Having said that, we know that there are some words that are unpleasant and contrary to God's desire and plan that we should discard such attitude or activity or way. There are unsafe for our lives.
1. Unsafe word:
a) Shame - disgrace and humiliation, often suffered at the hands of an enemy.
2. Biblical references:
a) Joel 2:26
i) 26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, And praise the name of the Lord your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame. (Joel 2:26 NKJV)
b) Romans 9:33
i) 33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” (Romans 9:33 NKJV)
c) 1 Corinthians 1:27
i) 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty. (1 Corinthians 1:27 NKJV)
d) Ephesians 5:8-12
i) 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. (Ephesians 5:8-12 NKJV)
e) Philippians 3:17-19
i) 17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. (Philippians 3:17-19 NKJV)
