THREE HUNDRED (300) IN THE BIBLE

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Number THREE HUNDRED in the Bible

a) And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water . . . and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men. . . (Judges 7:6, 8b)

b) Gideon started out with 32,000 men in his army as they went to defeat the Midians. Gideon thought that was too few to go up against the Midianites, but God told Gideon this was too many men. If they defeated the Midianites, Gideon and his men would certainly claim the victory as their own. Gideon had to make cuts from the team.

c) The first cut was based on those who were afraid. Fear is contagious and besides it keeps people from performing effectively. "And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand." (Judges 7:3) Then God said the number was still too many. Gideon had to make another cut.

d) God sent Gideon and his men down to the river. The Israelites were familiar with the custom of wandering people used on a journey. Because they are usually in a haste, they do not stoop down on their knees to drink water from a river. They bend forward as much as is necessary to bring their hand in contact with the stream, and they throw the water up rapidly.

e) The three hundred in Gideon's army who adopted this style of drinking were selected as fit for a work that required haste and full awareness of enemies around them. The rest were dismissed. This left only three hundred, a handful of men to defeat the Midianites. And they did with God getting the glory!

f) In this case, the number three hundred is a divine number because that's how many men it took to carry out God's plan.

g) While it is natural to think it takes a whole lot of people to do something, we need to believe with God any number is a majority. So, whether you are working with a budget of $300 or have a congregation of 300 members, invite God to be in control of all you do and let Him get the glory.

The End ...
