BIBLICAL VIEW | ANGER (3)

1. Introduction

a) Anger is a strong feeling of displeasure aroused by a wrong.

b) It can be a sorrow, a grief which can rise to levels of wrath, rage, irritation and violent frustration.

2. Stop your Anger

1 Samuel 20:30-32 New International Version (NIV)

30 Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? 31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”

32 “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” Jonathan asked his father.

a) Saul did not accept that GOD had already chosen David as the next king based on his character...

3. Thoughts to consider...

Proverbs 15:1 New International Version (NIV)

15 A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Matthew 21:12-14New International Version (NIV)

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.

b) Be motivated by love, not anger. Let us be angry at the sin.

James 1:19-20 New International Version (NIV)

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

Mark 3:1-5 New International Version (NIV)

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.

c) Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus’ enemies watched him closely. Would he heal the man’s hand? If he did, they planned to arrest him!

d) Jesus asked the man to come and stand in front of the congregation. Then turning to his enemies he asked, “Is it all right to do kind deeds on Sabbath days? Or is this a day for doing harm? Is it a day to save lives or to destroy them?” But they wouldn’t answer him.

e) Jesus looked angrily at those who sought to condemn his healing of the man with a withered hand...
