1. Gadarenes (Gadara, Gergesa)

a) Gadarenes is a place on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, between Susita and Bethsaida, within the "the country of the Gergesenes", where in Matthew 8:28 Jesus cast out devils. There is mention of a village by the name of Gergesai near the Lake of Tiberias, in which the swine drowned. A large monastery and church have been excavated at Kursi which make it probable that in Byzantine times this was regarded as the scene of the incident.
