SEVEN FINAL VISIONS (6) | THE DEAD ARE JUDGED (REVELATION 20:11-15)

1. Revelation

a) John wrote Revelation while a prisoner on the Island of Patmos, approximately 85-95 A.D. Its purpose is to give encouragement and hope for all Christians to continue watching for the return and triumph of the Lord Jesus Christ. It also is to warn of the Final Judgment that nonbelievers will endure on that Last Day.

b) John wrote that Revelation is special because,“Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3).

c) A brief view of the Book of Revelation. It gives you some basic understanding of the book of Revelation.

2. Judgment At The Throne Of God

Revelation 20:11-15
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

3. The Throne

Revelation 20:11

a) Great white throne

i) The throne in this vision represents the throne of the kingdom of God —that throne of David, of which Peter spoke on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:29-36). Jesus "who holds the key of David" (Revelation 3:7) sits there, for he is the king of God's kingdom. Therefore he said, "I have sat down with my Father in his throne" (Revelation 3:21).

b) Earth and heaven fled

i) Earth and sky fled away from the face of the One who sat upon the throne. This symbolizes that Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. There is no place for earthly kingdoms in the eternal heaven.

4. The Books

Revelation 20:12

a) And books were opened

i) These books exist right now in your present.

@1. There are books that record what God will is for you. These are the books of the Bible. You should be conforming your life to these books right now.

@2. There are books that record every deed people have done. You are causing one of these books to be written right now, by everything you think, say, and do. The most important thing you can do today is to ensure that your sins have been "blotted out" of the record of your deeds (Acts 3:19).

@3. There is another book called "The Book of Life" which has the names of all the friends and servants of Jesus. The time to have your name registered in that book is right now. Do you know that some people give more attention to getting their name in the telephone book than to getting their name in the Lamb’s book of life! Unless the blood of the Lamb has made you clean (Revelation 7:14), your name will not be found when the book of life is opened on the great Day of God Almighty.

5. The Lake of Fire

Revelation 20:13-15

a) Cast into the lake

i) In the previous vision, John saw The Dragon, the Beast and the False prophet cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10). Now he sees Death and Hades cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14). Following that, all whose names were not found written in the Book of Life were cast in too (Revelation 20:15).

b) The second death

i) This lake of fire and brimstone is called by John “the second death”. It is in contrast with “the first resurrection” (Revelation 20:6).
