APOSTASY, FALLING AWAY (4)
1. Bible Study
a) The Bible tells the story of how God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — loves us and wants us to love Him, despite our brokenness and tendency to go our own way (Isaiah 53:6). This relationship is the “main thing” about the Bible and it’s the “main thing” to keep focused on.
b) God's Word is fully sufficient to prepare us for everything the Bible commands us to do. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to transform us into Christ-likeness.
c) We study to understand God's character and attributes. Study the Bible anytime, anywhere. Each topic is ideal for personal learning but may also be adapted for a group as well.
2. Apostasy, Falling Away
a) Christians can fall from grace.
i) Galatians 5:4
4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
ii) Hebrews 12:15
15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;
b) Christians who have been hindered from obeying the truth have fallen from grace (Gal. 5:4, 7).
i) Galatians 5:4
4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
ii) Galatians 5:7
7 You were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth?
c) A believer (Christian) falls away by not holding fast his confidence and the boast of his hope until the end (Hebrews 3:6). He has an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God (Hebrews 3:12). He is hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Hebrews 3:8, 13, 15).
d) Christians who do not endure but throw away their confidence will not receive the promise (Hebrews 10:35-39).
e) The branches in Jesus that do not bear fruit are taken away, cast into the fire, and burned (John 15:1-6). They do not keep Jesus' commandments (John 15:10).
