FROM ADAM'S MORTALITY TO JESUS' IMMORTALITY

A Response to "From Adam's Mortality to Jesus' Immortality"

The Perfection That Was Lost

When God first created Adam in the Garden of Eden, it was a perfect creation. There was no death, no decay, no deterioration. Adam was created in the image of God, designed to live in unbroken fellowship with his Creator, and endowed with the gift of eternal life. But sin entered the world through one act of disobedience, and everything changed. Sin took away Adam's perfection of eternal life. From immortality to mortality. The moment Adam sinned, he lost everything, and worst still, his body began to deteriorate. The perfect creation became subject to decay. The one who was made to live forever became subject to death. And the consequences of that one act ripple through all of human history.

Death Reigns Through Adam

Since Adam's fall, death has reigned over humanity. Our bodies will deteriorate, and eventually, we will return to the ground. Genesis 3:19 declares that by the sweat of our brow we will earn our bread until our dying day, and then we will return to the ground from which we came. For we were made from the ground, and to the ground we will return. This is the grim reality of life in a fallen world. Every ache, every illness, every sign of aging is a reminder of the curse that Adam brought upon humanity. Death is not natural; it is an intrusion. It is not how things were meant to be; it is how things became because of sin. And the shadow of death hangs over every human life.

The Gift That Jesus Restores

But thanks be to God for Jesus Christ, who came not only to die and take away our sins but also to bring back all that Adam had lost. Romans 5:17-19 declares that the sin of one man, Adam, caused death to be king over all, but all who will take God's gift of forgiveness and acquittal are kings of life because of this one man, Jesus Christ. Adam's sin brought punishment to all, but Christ's righteousness makes men right with God so that they can live. Adam caused many to be sinners because he disobeyed God, and Christ caused many to be made acceptable to God because He obeyed. Where Adam failed, Jesus triumphed. Where Adam brought death, Jesus brought life. Where Adam lost immortality, Jesus restored it. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The Perishable Body Cannot Inherit the Kingdom

That is why our perishable bodies are not the right kind to live forever. First Corinthians 15:50 tells us plainly that an earthly body made of flesh and blood cannot get into God's Kingdom. These perishable bodies of ours are not the right kind to live forever. This is not a statement of despair; it is a declaration of hope. Our current bodies are temporary. They are fading, failing, and finite. But they are not the end of the story. God has prepared something better for those who belong to Him. He has prepared a body that will never perish, never decay, never grow old. A body that is fit for eternity.

The Rapture and the Transformation

That is why when the rapture comes, our perishable bodies shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye. Then shall we meet the Lord in the clouds. First Corinthians 15:52-55 describes this glorious moment with breathtaking clarity. It will all happen in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. There will be a trumpet blast from the sky, and all the Christians who have died will suddenly become alive with new bodies that will never, never die. Then we who are still alive shall suddenly have new bodies too. Our earthly bodies, the ones we have now that can die, must be transformed into heavenly bodies that cannot perish but will live forever. And when this happens, death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where then your victory? Where then your sting? For sin—the sting that causes death—will all be gone, and the law, which reveals our sins, will no longer be our judge.

The Victory Over Death

This is the triumph of the gospel. Death is not the final word. The grave is not the end. For those who are in Christ, death has been defeated. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. He has conquered death. He has risen from the grave. And because He lives, we shall live also. The mortality that came through Adam is swallowed up in the immortality that comes through Jesus. The curse of the fall is reversed by the gift of grace. The perishable puts on the imperishable. The mortal puts on immortality.

Final Reflection

From Adam's mortality to Jesus' immortality. This is the story of redemption. It is the story of how God took what was broken and made it whole. It is the story of how He took what was dying and made it live forever. It is the story of how He took sinners and made them saints. And it is the story of how He will take these perishable bodies and transform them into glorious, eternal, imperishable bodies that will never die. This is our hope. This is our confidence. This is our future. So let us not fear death. Let us not grieve as those who have no hope. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. He is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. And He is the guarantee that one day, we too shall rise.

Prayer for the Hope of Immortality

Lord, I thank You that through Jesus Christ, I have been given the gift of eternal life. I thank You that the mortality that came through Adam has been overcome by the immortality that comes through Christ. Help me to live with my eyes fixed on eternity, not on the temporary things of this world. Let me not fear death but face it with confidence, knowing that You have conquered it. And when the trumpet sounds, let me be ready to meet You in the clouds. Until that day, strengthen my faith, fill me with hope, and let me live for Your glory. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
