II. The ministry of Jesus 

1. A priest after the order of Melchizedek

a) Reference: Psalm 110:1,4 i) The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” (Psalms 110:1 NKJV) ii) 4 The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalms 110:4 NKJV) b) Fulfillment: Hebrews 5:5-6 i) 5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:  “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.” 6 As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 5:5-6 NKJV)

2. Rejected, not believed by the Jews a) Reference: Isaiah 53:1-4 i) Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. (Isaiah 53:1-4 NKJV) b) Fulfillment: John 1:11, 12:37-40; Luke 23:20-21 i) 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. (John 1:11 NKJV)  ii) 37 But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:  “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” (John 12:37-40 NKJV)  iii) 20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” (Luke 23:20-21 NKJV)

3. He would be hated without reason a) Reference: Psalm 35:19 i) 19 Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies; Nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without a cause. (Psalms 35:19 NKJV)  b) Fulfillment: John 15:23-25  i) 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ (John 15:23-25 NKJV)
