III. Jesus' last week, suffering and death 

1. Triumphal entry into Jerusalem

a) Reference: Zechariah 9:9

i) “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9 NKJV)


b) Fulfillment: Mark 11:7-11

i) Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it. And many spread their clothes on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David
That comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!”
 

11 And Jesus went into Jerusalem and into the temple. So when He had looked around at all things, as the hour was already late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve. (Mark 11:7-11 NKJV)

2. Praised by mouth of babes (young children)

a) Reference: Psalms 8:1-2

i) O Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!


Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. (Psalms 8:1-2 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Matthew 21:15-16

i) 15 But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant 16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying?”

And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read,

‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have perfected praise’?” (Matthew 21:15-16 NKJV)

3 .Betrayed by close friend who ate with him

a) Reference: Psalms 41:9

i) Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me. (Psalms 41:9 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Matthew 26:14-15, Mark 14:10

i) 14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. (Matthew 26:14-15 NKJV)

ii) 10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Him to them. (Mark 14:10 NKJV)
