III. Jesus' last week, suffering and death 

1. His clothes would be taken and lots cast

a) Reference: Psalms 22:18

i) 18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots. (Psalms 22:18 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Matthew 27:35; John 19:23-24

i) 35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:

“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots." (Matthew 27:35 NKJV)

ii) 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
 

Therefore the soldiers did these things. (John 19:23-24 NKJV)

2. Many will see and stare at him on the cross

a) Reference: Psalms 22:16-17

i) 16 For dogs have surrounded Me;
The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me.
They pierced My hands and My feet;
17 I can count all My bones.
They look and stare at Me. (Psalms 22:16-17 NKJV)


b) Fulfillment: Matthew 27:36, 55; Luke 23:48

i) 36 Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. (Matthew 27:36 NKJV)

ii) 55 And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar. (Matthew 27:55 NKJV)

iii) 48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. (Luke 23:48 NKJV)

3. Family, friends will see his suffering

a) Reference: Psalms 38:10-11

i) 10 My heart pants, my strength fails me;
As for the light of my eyes, it also has gone from me.


11 My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague,
And my relatives stand afar off. (Psalms 38:10-11 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Luke 23:48-49; Matthew 27:55-56

i) 48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. (Luke 23:48-49 NKJV)

ii) 55 And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. (Matthew 27:55-56 NKJV)
