BIBLE RECORDS | 124 MIRACLES (9)

1. What are "Miracles"?

a) Miracles are those acts that only God can perform; usually superseding natural laws. Baker’s Dictionary of the Bible defines a miracle as “an event in the external world brought about by the immediate agency or the simple volition of God.” It goes on to add that a miracle occurs to show that the power behind it is not limited to the laws of matter or mind as it interrupts fixed natural laws. So the term supernatural applies quite accurately.

b) Miracles are also known as Signs and Wonders.

c) Here we have one of the 124 miracles recorded in the Bible.

2. Miracle 9: LICE PLAGUE—“All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 8:16-18)

a) The Third Plague: Lice.

Exodus 8:16-18 New King James Version (NKJV)
16 So the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod, and strike the dust of the land, so that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’” 17 And they did so. For Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and struck the dust of the earth, and it became lice on man and beast. All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.

18 Now the magicians so worked with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So there were lice on man and beast.

b) Lice in Hebrew: kinnim.

i) They were miraculously produced from the dust of the land.

@1. “All the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt. …so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.” (Exodus 8:17-18)

@2. “The entomologists Kirby and Spence place these minute but disgusting insects in the very front rank of those which inflict injury upon man. A terrible list of examples they have collected of the ravages of this and closely allied parasitic pests.”
ii) The plague of lice is also referred to in Psalms 105:31.

iii) Some have supposed that the word denotes not lice properly, but gnats. Others, with greater probability, take it to mean the “tick” which is much larger than lice.
