SYMBOLS OF TWELVE TRIBES: REUBEN

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Symbols Of Twelve Tribes

a) The Symbols of the Tribes are often depicted in Synagogues. The Book of Numbers tells us that each Tribe had its characteristic symbol used in its encampment.

Numbers 2:2 New King James Version (NKJV)
2 “Everyone of the children of Israel shall camp by his own standard, beside the emblems of his father’s house; they shall camp some distance from the tabernacle of meeting.

2. Reuben

a) Reuben is depicted by mandrakes.

Genesis 30:14
14 Now Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

b) In synagogue art Reuben is often depicted by a Rising Sun. It could be due to the similarity of the Aramaic word for for seeing (Hama) and a Hebrew word (Hamah) meaning sun. The name Reuben in Hebrew means "See a Son" (Genesis 29:32).

Genesis 29:32
32 So Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, “The Lord has surely looked on my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love me.”
