III. Jesus' last week, suffering and death

1. Forsaken by God

a) Reference: Psalms 22:1-2

i) My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear;
And in the night season, and am not silent. (Psalms 22:1-2 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Matthew 27:45-46

i) 45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:45-46 NKJV)

2. Given vinegar to drink

a) Reference: Psalms 69:21

i) 21 They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. (Psalms 69:21 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: Matthew 27:34; John 19:28-30

i) 34 they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink. (Matthew 27:34 NKJV)

ii) 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:28-30 NKJV)

3. Jesus' side would be pierced

a) Reference: Zechariah 12:10

i) 10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. (Zechariah 12:10 NKJV)

b) Fulfillment: John 19:34

i) 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. (John 19:34 NKJV)
