God Is Preparing You

A 5-Minute Devotional for Busy People

Minute 1: The Hook — When Preparation Feels Like Loss

You thought preparation would look like growth.

More resources. More clarity. More confidence. More evidence that you're ready for what's next. Instead, you feel like you're shrinking. The team got smaller. The budget got tighter. The skills you relied on suddenly feel insufficient. The very things you thought God would use to build your future seem to be disappearing one by one.

And the whisper is relentless: "You're going backward. If God was really preparing you, you'd feel stronger, not weaker. More equipped, not more empty."

So you scramble. You try to refill what is leaking. You cling to the old strengths, the old numbers, the old confidence that once made you feel secure. Because surely — surely — preparation means addition, not subtraction. Right?

Minute 2: The Scripture — The Army That Was Too Big

Read Judges 7:2, 4–7 (ESV):

"The LORD said to Gideon, 'The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, "My own hand has saved me." ... And the LORD said to Gideon, 'The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there... Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.' And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. And the LORD said to Gideon, 'With the 300 men who lapped I will save you...'"

Read it again. Let the math sink in.

32,000 soldiers showed up. God said: "Too many." 22,000 went home. Then 9,700 were disqualified for drinking wrong. Only 300 remained — less than 1% of the original force. And God said: "Now you're ready."

Minute 3: The Twist — God Prepares You by Emptying You

Here's the twist that will reframe your shrinking season:

God didn't add to Gideon's army. He reduced it until it was embarrassing.

The Hebrew word for too many is rab — abundant, numerous, more than enough. God looked at 32,000 motivated, armed, capable warriors and said, "This is too much strength for what I'm about to do." Not because the men were sinful. Not because they were lazy. But because their very sufficiency would steal the glory.

And the test at the water? The 300 who lapped like dogs were in the most vulnerable position possible — heads up, eyes forward, hands free, but completely undignified. The others knelt in comfort, drinking their fill. The 300 stayed alert, but they looked foolish doing it. God's prepared army was small, exposed, and objectively ridiculous by every military standard.

We think preparation is God building our capacity. But often, preparation is God emptying it. Every loss you’ve suffered, every resource that evaporated, every skill that suddenly feels inadequate — it may not be evidence that you’re disqualified. It may be evidence that God is stripping away the "my own hand has saved me" from your vocabulary.

The Hebrew word for boast is pa'ar — to glorify oneself, to vaunt, to shine with self-congratulation. God said, "I won't let Midian fall to an army that large, because then Israel will pa'ar over Me." Your preparation isn't about making you impressive. It's about making you dependent. Because the moment you become small enough that victory is impossible without Him, the miracle becomes unmistakable.

Your emptiness isn't a detour from the plan. It is the plan. God is preparing you by making you too small to succeed without Him.

Minute 4: The Practice — Three Moves in the Reducing

Five minutes. Three moves. Right now.

Thank Him for what He's removed. Name one thing you lost that you’ve been grieving — the team member, the budget line, the confidence, the reputation. Whisper: "Thank You for taking this so I couldn't boast in my own hand."

Embrace the undignified position. The 300 lapped like dogs. Stop trying to look competent for the crowd. Say: "I am small, and that is exactly where Your glory lives."

Do the next thing with 300. Not with 32,000. Not with the old resources. With what little you have left. Send the email. Make the call. Take the step. God doesn't need your full army. He needs your full dependence.

Minute 5: The Prayer — Prepared in the Emptying

Lord, I thought preparation would feel like strength. Instead, it feels like loss. I keep counting my resources and watching the numbers drop, and I've mistaken the reduction for rejection. But Gideon started with 32,000 and ended with 300 — and You called the 300 "ready."

Forgive me for clinging to what made me feel sufficient. I see now: every person who walked away, every budget that shrank, every skill that failed me — it was You, reducing my army so that when the victory comes, my hand will not steal Your glory. I am not being abandoned. I am being prepared.

I choose the undignified position. I choose to lap like a dog at the water's edge — alert, dependent, and ready. With my 300, I will face Midian. Because You said the saving is Yours, and the glory is Yours, and the preparation is finished when I am finally small enough for You to be huge. In Jesus' name, Amen.
