OLD DEVIL'S NEW TRICKS
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Devil's goal
a) He comes to steal and kill and destroy
@1. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10 NIV)
2. Devil's plan
a) Doubt ... he makes you question God's Word and his goodness.
b) Discouragement ... he makes you look at your problems rather than at God.
c) Diversion ... he makes the wrong things seem attractive so that you will want them more than the right thing.
d) Defeat ... he makes you feel like a failure so that you don't even try.
e) Delay ... he makes you put off doing something so that it never gets done.
3. Devil's scheme
a) He uses unforgiveness to outwit you
i) 5 If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. 6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. 9 Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. (2 Corinthians 2:5-11 NIV)
4. Counter devil's scheme
a) Put on the the full armor of god
i) 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:11-12 NIV)
ii) 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (Ephesians 6:13-18 NIV)
5. Struggle against evil forces
a) Whether you like it or not, believe it or not, you are struggling against the evil forces the moment you have given your life to God. The good news is that you stand victorious in Christ Jesus.
@1. 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11 NIV)
The End ...
