RASH VOWS - PAUL

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Ecclesiastes 5:2 says, "Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God."

b) Scripture records the vows of many men and women. Some of these vows proved to be rash and unwise, and others, though extreme, were kept to the letter by those who made them.

c) Let us learn from the examples in God's Word not to make rash vows.

1. Paul
(Text: Acts 18:18)

i) 18 So Paul still remained a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow. (Acts 18:18 NKJV)

2. What was his vow?

a) To offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving in Jerusalem.

3. What was the result of his vow?

a) He made the sacrifice despite the danger.

4. What is the text all about?

a) The vow Paul took was probably a temporary Nazirite vow that ended with shaving of the head and offering the hair as a sacrifice.

@1. 18 Then the Nazirite shall shave his consecrated head at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and shall take the hair from his consecrated head and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offering. (Numbers 6:18 NKJV)

The End ...
