JESUS' TRIAL BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Jesus' trial was actually a series of hearings, carefully controlled to accomplish the death of Jesus. The verdict was predecided, but certain "legal" procedures were necessary. A lot of effort went into condemning and crucifying an innocent man. Jesus went through an unfair trial in our place so that we would not have to face a fair trial and receive the well-deserved punishment for our sins.
1. Event
a) Trial before the council (Sanhedrin).
2. Probable reasons
a) Formal religious trial and condemnation to death.
3. Text references
a) Luke 22:66-71
i) 66 As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68 And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.” (Luke 22:66-71 NKJV)
b) Other references
i) Mark 15:1
ii) Matthew 27:1
