MOTHERS OF KINGS: NAAMAH

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Mothers of Kings

a) Mothers of kings in 1 & 2 Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles are often mentioned for their deeds. These mothers certainly had some influence in the young lives of their sons and in who they eventually turned out to be. There are many children with godly mothers who grow up and choose to do evil. And there are just as many children with bad mothers who grow up and choose to do good. But for the most part, the faith and the future of all children is shaped to some extent by the behavior, words and actions of their parents.

b) A child is a reflection of the woman who bore him or her – not only in appearance, but also in word, action, attitude and character. Mothers should never underestimate the influence that they and their faith have in their children’s lives. Mothers have the power to change the world by raising sons and daughters who will be bearers of light, proclaimers of truth, defenders of justice and forces of good.

c) Here we have one of the many records of mothers influencing their sons for good or evil.

2. Naamah

i) Naamah (1 Kings 14:21, 31; 2 Chronicles 12:13) was the mother of Rehoboam, once a king of a united Israel and Judah, but when Israel rebelled and formed their own Kingdom he became only the king of Judah. He was crowned at forty-one years of age and reigned for seventeen years. The Bible says he did evil because he had not set his heart on seeking the Lord.

1 Kings 14:21 New King James Version (NKJV)
21 And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king. He reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. His mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess.

1 Kings 14:31 New King James Version (NKJV)
31 So Rehoboam rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. His mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess. Then Abijam his son reigned in his place.

2 Chronicles 12:13 New King James Version (NKJV)
13 Thus King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned. Now Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king; and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. His mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess.

The End ...
