THE AFFECTIONS (1)

1. The Affections

a) Should be supremely set upon God.

Deuteronomy 6:3 
Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Mark 12:30 
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

b) Should be set

i) Upon the commandments of God.

Psalm 19:8-10 
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psalm 119:20 
My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.

Psalm 119:97 
O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

ii) Upon the house and worship of God.

1 Chronicles 29:3 
Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house,

Psalm 26:8 
LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.

Psalm 27:4 
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.

Psalm 84:1-2
