Choose Faith
A 5-Minute Devotional for Busy People
Minute 1: The Hook
You don't feel like a person of faith today.
You feel like a person of frayed nerves, unanswered questions, and a to-do list that laughs at your prayer time. Your Bible sits unopened. Your worship feels flat. And somewhere between the anxiety and the exhaustion, you've started to believe the lie that real Christians don't feel this way.
Real Christians, you think, wake up with fire in their bones, certainty in their chests, and zero doubt in their rearview mirror.
So you hide. You perform. You slap on a smile and say "I'm trusting God" while your stomach is in knots and your mind is a battlefield.
Here's the truth: You don't need more faith. You need honest faith.
Minute 2: The Scripture
Read Mark 9:24 (ESV) — but hear it in the father's desperate voice:
"Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, 'I believe; help my unbelief!'"
This isn't a hero of the faith standing on a mountaintop. This is a exhausted parent at the end of his rope. His son is convulsing. The disciples failed him. He came to Jesus with a conditional "if You can" — not a confident "I know You will."
And Jesus? He doesn't hand the man a theology textbook and tell him to study harder. He doesn't say, "Come back when your faith meter hits 100%."
He heals the boy on the spot — with the father's faith still wobbling like a three-legged table.
Minute 3: The Twist
Here's the twist that will set you free:
Choosing faith doesn't mean choosing certainty. It means choosing direction.
The Greek word for believe in this verse is pisteuō — and it doesn't mean "to feel convinced." It means "to trust, to rely on, to commit to." It's a verb, not an emotion. You don't wait for doubt to disappear before you believe. You believe while doubt is sitting in the passenger seat.
The father didn't say, "Lord, I have zero unbelief." He said, "I believe — AND — help my unbelief." Both things were true at the exact same time. He was a walking contradiction, and Jesus accepted his offering.
This means your 51% faith is enough. Your shaky "I think You're there" is enough. Your whispered "help" in the dark is enough.
God doesn't need your perfect faith. He needs your present faith.
The enemy wants you to believe that doubt disqualifies you. But Jesus proves that honesty activates heaven. You don't have to feel certain to choose trust. You just have to aim your feet in His direction and let Him handle the rest.
Minute 4: The Practice
Five minutes. Three moves. Right now.
Admit the unbelief. Stop performing. Whisper out loud: "God, here's what I'm actually afraid of." He can handle your honesty. He already knows.
Choose the direction, not the feeling. Say this: "I don't feel it, but I'm choosing to trust You anyway." Faith is a decision, not a mood.
Take one wobbly step. Open the email. Send the text. Pay the bill. Apply for the job. Do the hard thing while your knees are still knocking. That's not hypocrisy — that's courage.
Minute 5: The Prayer
Lord, my faith feels small today. I'm half-convinced, half-afraid, and completely exhausted from trying to manufacture certainty. But like the father in Mark 9, I bring You my broken belief. I don't have perfect faith — I have present faith. Help my unbelief. I choose to trust You not because I feel it, but because You are trustworthy. Take my 51% and make it enough. In Jesus' name, Amen.
One Sentence to Carry With You Today:
You don't need faith the size of a mountain — you just need faith pointed in the right direction.
Now go. Wobbly knees and all. He can work with that.
