THE DEATH OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
(Message by Tanny Keng)
a) A study in 2 Corinthians 3, comparing the Ten Commandments, written on tablets of stone, with the new covenant, written in human hearts as “the epistle of Christ.”
b) Before we look at 2 Corinthians 3, we need to read the background story, giving us the facts to which Paul will refer. The important thing to notice is that the Ten Commandments were written on stone tablets, and after the Ten Commandments were given, Moses’s face shone. By noting this, you will be aware, when we study 2 Corinthians 3 that Paul is referring to the Ten Commandments.
i) The Ten Commandments
Exodus 34:1, 27-28
Exodus 34:1, 27-28
1 The LORD said to Moses, 'Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the original tablets which you broke.' ...
27 The LORD said to Moses, 'Write these words, for according to these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.' 28 So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
ii) The Shining Face of Moses
Exodus 34:29-35
Exodus 34:29-35
29 Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand. As he descended the mountain, Moses did not know that, because he had been talking with God, the skin of his face shone. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone! They were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterwards, all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the LORD had spoken with him in Mount Sinai.
33 Now when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 Whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. But when he came out and told the people of Israel what God had commanded him, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. So Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
The End ...
