SALT & LIGHT
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Salt And Light
Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
2. Properties of Salt and Light
a) Salt has properties that make it very apt symbols of the Christian.
i) Salt is a cleanser and promotes healing. Bathing a cut or sore in salt water helps kill infection. Salt, as a mild abrasive, can be used as a cleanser. The Christian’s influence in the world cleanses and heals.
ii) Salt is a preservative. It will prevent meat and fish from going bad, and other foods can be preserved in brine. The Christian’s influence helps preserve the things which are good, and keep out the rotten influences.
iii) Salt is an enhancer. It enhances the flavor of food, and the temperature of freezing or boiling water. The Christian’s influence enhances the world and brings joy to life.
b) Light has properties that also make it very apt symbols of the Christian.
i) Light cheers and brightens. Without the Christian’s hope shining all around, this world would be a desolate and gloomy place indeed.
ii) Light guides one in the dark. The world is in darkness. Everywhere there is ignorance and deceit spread by the devil. But the Christian’s wisdom is a guiding light to the world that it may see the path to God.
iii) Light reveals danger, and warns of it. There are many kinds of lights and beacons that warn us of hazards. The Christian’s fear of God is a warning light to the world which is going to be judged by God.
The End ...
