SELF ESTEEM: MEASURE YOURSELF WITH GOD'S MEASURING ROD

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Self Esteem

a) The importance of self esteem is taught clearly in the Bible. An unfruitful life can result from low self esteem. A poor self image makes a poor servant of God.

2. Measure Yourself With God’s Measuring Rod

a) We regard ourselves correctly, when we do so "according to the measure that God's measuring rod has allotted to us" (2 Corinthians 10:13).

b) Using the wrong measuring rod for self-assessment, will give you a false regard for yourself. If, for example, you measure yourself by comparing yourself to other people, you are using the wrong measure. "Measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, they are not wise" (2 Corinthians 10:12).

c) What then is the correct measure of self esteem? How can you avoid thinking too much or too little of yourself? How can you have a true self image? You have to use the right standard, namely "the measure of faith God has given you" (Romans 12:3).

d) Okay, but what is meant by "measure of faith"? Faith is the product of God’s word (Romans 10:17). The measure of faith is what God’s word says about you. Take your true measure. Listen to what God thinks of you, and throw out the faulty measures of this world. You should have as much faith in yourself as God has shown in you.

e) That makes an understatement of one of my favorite quips: "You must be worth something, God don't make junk!"

f) How to truly esteem yourself?

i) You are made not much lower than the angels (Hebrews 2:7-9 Psalms 8:4-6).

ii) You are made in the image of God (Colossians 3:10, Genesis 1:26-27).

iii) Your name is written in the Book of Life (Philippians 4:3).

iv) You are one of the anointed and sealed (2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Ephesians 1:3-14).

v) You have a seat in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6-10).

vi) You are an heir of God with an inheritance in heaven (1 Peter 1:4 Romans 8:17).

vii) God himself has placed you in the body and given you a function that he considers both necessary and pleasing to him (1 Corinthians 12:18,22).

The End ...
