WISE JOSHUA
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) The special description "wise" is used for 12 significant people in the Bible. They can be helpful models in our own pursuit of wisdom.
b) Here is one of them.
1. The person: Joshua
a) Their role: Wise leader
b) Text reference: Deuteronomy 34:9
i) 9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; so the children of Israel heeded him, and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. (Deuteronomy 34:9 NKJV)
c) How they practiced wisdom
@1. Learned by observing Moses, obeyed God, led the people into the Promised Land.
2. What is the text all about?
a) Joshua succeeded Moses as Israel's leader. He was one of only two living eyewitnesses to the Egyptian plagues and the Exodus from Egypt. He was Moses' personal aide for 40 years. Because Joshua had assisted Moses for many years, he was well prepared to take over the leadership of the nation.
b) God was giving the people rest. This was wonderful news to these people who had been on the move for their entire lives. The people who had no land would be given a land of their own, and they woudl be able to settle and to "rest."
c) When God commissioned Joshua, he was told three times to be strong and courageous. Here, Joshua was given the same kind of encouragement from the people. Apparently, he took God's message to heart and found the strength and courage he needed in his relationship with God.
d) As the story goes, eventually Joshua lead the people to cross Jordan River into the Promised Land.
The End ...
