ABRAHAM IN THE NEW TESTAMENT (5)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Let's look at Abraham in the New Testament.

1. Abraham received great promises from God.

2. New Testament references

a) Luke 1:55, 72-73

i)  55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.” (Luke 1:55 NKJV)

ii) 72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant, 73 The oath which He swore to our father Abraham. (Luke 1:72-73 NKJV)

b) Acts 3:25; 7:17-18

i) 25 You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ (Acts 3:25 NKJV)

ii) 17 “But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt 18 till another king arose who did not know Joseph. (Acts 7:17-18 NKJV)

c) Galatians 3:6, 14-16

i) 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. (Galatians 3:6 NKJV)

ii) 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 15 Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. 16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. (Galatians 3:14-16 NKJV)

d) Hebrews 6:13-15

i) 13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14 saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. (Hebrews 6:13-15 NKJV)

3. Explanation

a) Many of the promises of God made to Abraham seemed impossible to be realized, but Abraham trusted God. The promises to believers in God's Word also seem too incredible to believe, but we can trust God to keep all his promises.
