UNSAFE WORD: ABOMINATION
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Many a time we use and speak word so easily without thinking much of whether such word is correct to use in our daily conversation. We treat it lightly. Word such as "LUCK" is not found in the Bible and yet we often use it.
b) Why is it so necessary to learn to use and speak the correct word? Matthew 12:36-37 has a lot to say about it.
i) 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36-37 NKJV)
c) We will have to give an account of ourselves (Romans 14:12), every idle (careless, empty, thoughtless, worthless) word we speak (Matthew 12:36) and every work (deed) including every secret (hidden) thing whether good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:14) in the day of judgment. For that reason, it compels us to use and speak the correct word or words especially God's Word. It's safe to use and we can learn a lot from its intended meaning.
d) Having said that, we know that there are some words that are unpleasant and contrary to God's desire and plan that we should discard such attitude or activity or way. There are unsafe for our lives.
1. Unsafe word:
a) Abomination(s) - anything extremely repulsive to God.
2. Biblical references:
a) Proverbs 6:16-19; 24:9; 28:9
i) 16 These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: 17 A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19 NKJV)
ii) 9 The devising of foolishness is sin, And the scoffer is an abomination to men. (Proverbs 24:9 NKJV)
iii) 9 One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer is an abomination. (Proverbs 28:9 NKJV)
b) Isaiah 66:3
i) 3 “He who kills a bull is as if he slays a man; He who sacrifices a lamb, as if he breaks a dog’s neck; He who offers a grain offering, as if he offers swine’s blood; He who burns incense, as if he blesses an idol. Just as they have chosen their own ways, And their soul delights in their abominations. (Isaiah 66:3 NKJV)
c) Daniel 12:11
i) 11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. (Daniel 12:11 NKJV)
d) Matthew 24:15
i) 15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” - whoever reads, let him understand. (Matthew 24:15 NKJV)
e) Revelation 17:4
i) 4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. (Revelation 17:4 NKJV)
