MATTHEW GOSPEL: ESCAPE TO EGYPT
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Matthew records nine special events that are not mentioned in any of the other Gospels. In each case, the most apparent reason for Matthew's choice has to do with his purpose in communicating the gospel to Jewish people. Five cases are fulfillments of Old Testament prophecies (marked with asterisks on the subject). The other four would have been of particular interest to the Jews of Matthew's day.
b) Here is one of the cases.
1. Subject
a) Escape to Egypt
2. Scripture text: Matthew 2:13-15
i) 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son." (Matthew 2:13-15 NKJV)
