GOD'S TRUTH NOT MEN'S TRADITIONS
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. God's Truth Not Men's Traditions
Colossians 2:6-8
6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.
a) There is human philosophy, and there is the gospel. The former doesn't get you to heaven. The latter does. Paul goes on to warn, "Let no one judge you... Let no one defraud you..." by man-made commandments and doctrines (Colossians 2:16-23).
b) In Paul's time, false religion came from two main sources:
i) The Jewish (Old Testament) shadows (Colossians 2:16-17).
ii) The pagan influence resulting in such things as worship of angels (Colossians 2:18).
c) Today these influences, along with philosophies such as evolutionism and humanism, still attempt to change the gospel of Christ, sometimes subtly, sometimes radically, but always making it into a new and different message (and therefore "of no value") rather than the true and original message of the Messiah.
The End ...
