HOW MANY CROWNS ARE IN SCRIPTURE?

1. What does Scripture say about crowns?
a) In the Bible at least seven distinct words (five in the Old Testament, two in the New) are translated as crown or crowns in our English Bibles. Some crowns pertain or exist only in this life while others will be possessed for all eternity. There are even crowns that are not nice to have! Below are some mentioned in Scripture.
d) In the Bible crowns can represent an achievement or restoration reached. People who become wise wear a crown of glory (Proverbs 4:9). To those who are righteous and reach an advanced age, their silver hair is like a crown of glory (Proverbs 16:31). Those who serve and help guide the church of God, if they do so willingly with a true heart of love, will receive a crown of glory from Jesus (1Peter 5:1 - 4). This same symbolic crown will be worn by the Kingdom of Judah when, in the future, it is restored by God (Isaiah 28:5).
e) The Bible also speaks of crowns in a negative sense. A crown is worn by the first of the "four horsemen of the apocalypse" (Revelation 6:2). It symbolically represents the power that will be given, especially in the end time, to false christs and false prophets to deceive people. The "crown of pride" worn by the Northern Ten Tribes of Israel (whose capital was Samaria) was prophesied to break (Isaiah 28:1, 3). The crown of glory (rulership) was also prophesied to be taken away from the king of Israel (Jeremiah 13:17-18).
f) Crowns can also represent gifts or rewards received, or even rejoicing. Paul talked about a crown of rejoicing he hopes to have when those he taught are resurrected at Jesus' Second Coming (1Thessalonians 2:19). Peter tells us that Christians will receive a crown of glory from the Chief Shepherd (Jesus - 1Peter 5:4). Those who are faithful to God and endure to the end will receive a crown of eternal life (James 1:12, Revelation 2:10). A crown of righteousness is promised to all those who believe in, trust, and love God (2Timothy 4:8).

b) King David rejoiced over the crown of pure gold God gave him (Psalm 21:1 - 3). Mordecai, who along with Esther, saved the Jewish people from total destruction was also given a great crown of gold (Esther 8:15). God commanded a golden crown be made special for the High Priest (Exodus 39:30).
