BIBLE TIMELINE: ADAM (4000 B.C.)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Life of Adam (4000 B.C.)
a) According to Jewish tradition, the creation of Adam was on October 7th, 3761 B.C. This day, known as Tishri 1, is the first day of the first civil year on the Hebrew calendar. Tishri 1 is also the day when God's commands his people to celebrate his feast day known as the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah).
b) The word for Adam in the Hebrew (Strong's Concordance #H120) means 'red' or 'red earth.' His name is a reference to his creation by God who made him "out of the dust of the ground" (Genesis 2:7, NKJV throughout). The well-known Jewish historian Josephus states the following about the meaning of Adam's name.
i) "This man was called Adam, which in the Hebrew tongue signifies one that is red, because he was formed out of red earth . . . " (Antiquities (History) of the Jews)
c) Adam was unique in all creation in that God PERSONALLY breathed into him the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). This special, one time only act underscores the awesome fact that Man was designed to be in God's own image (Genesis 1:27).
d) The story of Adam, his wife Eve (whose name means 'life'), and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden is known to most. Below, however, is some information related to the first man you might not have known.
i) The first prophecy recorded in the Bible is given right after the first couple's sin was discovered, when God told the serpent (the devil) who deceived Eve that the seed of the women (symbolic of Christ) would be his enemy and be victorious over him (Genesis 3:15).
ii) Cain, the firstborn child of Adam and Eve, became humankind’s very first murderer and fugitive when he killed his brother Abel.
iii) Written in the footnotes of Josephus' Antiquities (History) of the Jews is an old tradition stating Adam produced 33 sons and 23 daughters!
iv) The long lifespan of Adam and his descendants made possible a tremendous increase in the human population. Mathematicians have estimated that by the time of the Great Flood (about 1,600 years from when Adam was created), the population of earth could have conservatively reached at least ONE BILLION!
e) Adam lived an incredibly long life of 930 years. This lifespan would ultimately make him the fourth oldest human who ever lived, behind Methusaleh (969 years), Jared (962 years), and Noah (950 years). His life was SO LONG that he saw his great, great, great, great, great, great grandson Lamech born.
2. Important events and people in the life of Adam
i) Adam and Eve choose to live by the standard of deciding for themselves (instead of having faith in God) what is right and wrong (good and evil). Their sin gets them kicked out of Eden.
ii) This first child born to the first couple, Cain, murders in cold blood his younger brother Abel. Cain is cursed directly by God for his grievous sin.
iii) Methuselah, born when Adam is around 685 years old, will live to become the oldest person on record.
iv) Man's disregard for God and disobedience to his way will increasingly grow during and beyond his life.
The End ...
