HADES

1. Hades
a) Hades is referred to as the place where the dead go and is not necessarily a place of torment for the wicked. This Greek term was used in the New Testament to mean the grave. It can also refer to death as it does in 1 Corinthians 15:55, in the King James Version, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”
b) Jesus used it in this context in Matthew 16:18 saying, “upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell (Hades) shall not prevail against it.” Hades also appears to be a place of refuse and is not normally associated with a place of torment. The one exception is where it is used in reference to Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:23).
