THE OLD TESTAMENT LAW 6: IMPORTANCE TO US

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. The Old Testament Law

a) God gave the people of Israel His written law in the form of the Ten Commandments.  He also spoke to these Israelites in order that He might teach, guide, and empower them to live as He wanted them to live. However, what about those who lived before the Ten Commandments were given?  Did they have to live by God’s standards?  Was there a Law of God before the time of Moses?

b) What is God’s law?  What are the characteristics of this law?  Is this law still important to Christians, and/or others, today?  God, as creator, created us to live, and conduct ourselves, His way.  As His creatures, we are obligated to relate to Him as our creator.

2. Importance To Us

a) God’s law is important to us today for several reasons.  The most important thing it does is to force us to recognize our need for righteousness, forgiveness, and salvation. Only in Jesus Christ can these things be gained, “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes” (Romans 10:4).

b) Without Jesus Christ, the law shows us our shortcomings and condemns us to eternal punishment separated from the love of God.  When we become followers of Jesus, instead of the law being an oppressive taskmaster, it is now a guide for us so that we might know how to better serve our Lord, God, and Savior.

The End ...
