DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM: SUMMARY OF MATTHEW 24

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Destruction Of Jerusalem

a) Now enters the last Times of Israel — THE KINGDOM IN ALL THE WORLD — the period in which we still live today.

b) God's spiritual kingdom, the new Israel, had been spreading rapidly throughout the world. Churches had been established in numerous cities. The Holy Spirit's blessing, and the risen Christ's power, had been manifested everywhere. It was clear that Christ was reigning as both king and high priest in heaven.

c) Many, nevertheless, were blind to all this, and the Jews, especially in Jerusalem, generally just kept right on following the old way as if nothing had happened. They rejected their Christ and his sacrifice on the cross. They clung to their temple worship for forty years. But in AD 70 it was suddenly taken from them by the Romans who besieged and destroyed their city and temple — just as Jesus himself had foretold.

2. Summary Of Matthew 24

a) The following list outlines Matthew 24. However, parallel passages in Luke and Mark are provided for reference.

I. The Coming Destruction

i) Destruction of the temple foretold - Matthew 24:1-2 (Luke 19:41-44, Luke 21:5-6, Mark 13:1-2).

ii) The disciples' questions - Matthew 24:33 (Luke 21:7, Mark 13:3-4).

a) The disciples connected the destruction of Jerusalem with the end of the world.

II. The Seven Signs

i) False prophets - Matthew 24:4-5 (Luke 21:8, Mark 13:5-6).

ii) Wars and rumors of wars - Matthew 24:6 (Luke 21:9-10, Mark 13:7).

iii) Famines and earthquakes - Matthew 24:7 (Luke 21:11, Mark 13:8).

iv) Persecution - Matthew 24:8-9 (Luke 21:12-19, Mark 13:9-13).

v) Apostasy - Matthew 24:10-13.

vi) World evangelism - Matthew 24:14 (Mark 13:10).

vii) Abomination of desolation - Matthew 24:15 (Luke 21:20, Mark 13:14).

a) These things would precede the destruction of Jerusalem, but only the last one was really a sign of imminence. The others were normal events which did not indicate the end. Nor do they today.

III. Warnings

i) Flight from the city - Matthew 24:16-20 (Luke 17:31-36,, Luke 21:21-23, Mark 13:14-18).

ii) Siege of the city - Matthew 24:21-22 (Luke 17:31-36, Luke 21:23-24, Mark 13:19-20).

iii) Warning against false prophets - Matthew 24:23-28 (Luke 17:22-23, Mark 13:21-23).

iv) A day of judgment - Matthew 24:29-31 (Luke 21:25-27, Mark 13:24-27).

a) The first two warnings are specific to the destruction of Jerusalem. The latter two warnings are general and are still relevant today.

IV. A Call To Watchfulness

i) The lesson of the fig tree -  Matthew 24:32-33 (Luke 21:29-31, Mark 13:28-29).

ii) The inevitability of fulfillment - Matthew 24:34-36 (Luke 21:32-33, Mark 13:20-32).

iii) The lesson of the Flood - Matthew 24:37-42 (Luke 17:27-30).

iv) The lesson of the thief - Matthew 24:43-44.

v) The lesson of the slave - Matthew 24:45-51 (Mark 13:33-37).

a) These lessons are as much relevant today as ever, especially if we apply them to death and judgment (Hebrews 9:27-28).

The End ...
