WHO THEN IS YOUR REFUGE?

A Response to "Who Then Is Your Refuge?"

The Meaning of Refuge

A refuge is a place where you are sheltered from danger, or the condition of being sheltered from danger. The Bible defines it as a shelter or protection from danger or distress. Taking refuge is like finding a safe place during a storm, or getting comfort in a time of trouble. It is a place of safety, a sanctuary from harm, a haven of peace. In a world filled with uncertainty, danger, and distress, the need for refuge is universal. Everyone seeks safety. Everyone longs for protection. Everyone craves a place where they can be secure.

The Cities of Refuge

The Bible speaks of the Cities of Refuge. There were six cities allocated to the Levite tribe in the Old Testament that provided asylum for perpetrators of unintentional manslaughter. These cities offered offenders refuge and protection from retribution of the avenging family until their case went to trial. In Joshua 20, God gave Joshua specific instructions for the Israelites to follow in how the Cities of Refuge should function. When a situation arose where an individual unintentionally killed someone, the perpetrator was to flee to one of the six Cities of Refuge. Once arrived, they were to stand in front of the gate and plead their case to the elders of the city, who were required to admit the fugitive inside their gates and offer them asylum. The fugitive was required to live within the walls of the city until they came to trial. If the High Priest ruled in favor of the fugitive, he was allowed to continue living in the city until the death of the priest who had acquitted him. After that, the offender was free to return to his own home. If the offender left the protection of the city before the death of the High Priest, then the one who sought vengeance had the right to kill him without being guilty of murder. These cities were a picture of God's provision for mercy, justice, and protection.

The Foreshadow of Christ

The Cities of Refuge point to something greater. They foreshadow Jesus Christ, our ultimate Refuge. In the same way that the manslayer fled to the city for safety, we flee to Christ for salvation. In the same way that the city offered protection from the avenger, Christ offers protection from the judgment of sin. In the same way that the fugitive had to remain within the city to be safe, we must remain in Christ to be secure. The High Priest's death marked the release of the fugitive. In the same way, the death of our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, secures our eternal freedom. He is our Refuge, our Shelter, our Safe Place. In Him, we find protection from the judgment we deserve. In Him, we find mercy for our sins. In Him, we find a home that cannot be taken away.

Who Is Your Refuge?

With so many uncertainties surrounding us nowadays and not knowing what would happen next, who then is your refuge? Where do you run when the storms of life threaten to overwhelm you? Where do you turn when fear grips your heart and anxiety fills your mind? Where do you go when you need protection, comfort, and safety? The Psalmist gives us the answer: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." He is not a distant fortress; He is a present help. He is not a refuge that can be shaken; He is unshakable. He is not a shelter that can be breached; He is impenetrable. He is our refuge, and He is enough.

The Confidence of Refuge

With God as our refuge, we need not fear. We will not fear, even as the earth gives way and as the waters roar. Even when everything around us seems to collapse, we have a foundation that cannot be moved. Even when the storms rage, we have a shelter that cannot be destroyed. Even when danger surrounds us, we have a protector who cannot be defeated. Our refuge is not in our circumstances; it is in our God. Our safety is not in our own strength; it is in His power. Our peace is not in the absence of trouble; it is in the presence of our Savior.

Final Reflection

Who then is your refuge? Is it your wealth, your relationships, your health, or your achievements? All of these can fail. All of these can be taken away. All of these are temporary. But God is eternal. He is unchanging. He is faithful. He is our refuge. Run to Him. Trust in Him. Rest in Him. He will not fail you. He will not forsake you. He will not let you go.

Prayer for Refuge

Lord, I thank You that You are my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. In the uncertainties of life, I run to You. In the storms of fear, I hide in You. In the dangers that surround me, I trust in You. You are my shelter, my protection, my safe place. I will not fear, for You are with me. I will not be shaken, for You hold me fast. I rest in Your presence and find peace in Your love. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
