SUBMIT TO GOD AND STAND FIRM

THE ORDER OF VICTORY

"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

📖 Ephesians 6:13 (NKJV)
"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."

Introduction

There is a divine order to spiritual victory. It is not random. It is not arbitrary. It is not negotiable. It is the order that God Himself has established, and it is the order that we must follow if we are to overcome the enemy, stand firm in the battle, and walk in the victory that Christ has purchased for us. That order is simple yet profound: submit to God, then stand firm. It is surrender before resistance. It is bowing before battling. It is yielding before warring. It is humility before victory.

The Apostle James lays out this divine order with stunning clarity. He writes, "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." The Greek word for "submit" is hypotassō, which means to arrange under, to subordinate, to place oneself under authority, or to obey. It is a military term. It is the picture of a soldier submitting to his commanding officer. It is the picture of a servant submitting to his master. It is the picture of a child submitting to his father. It is the voluntary placement of oneself under the authority of another. And James says we are to submit to God.

Then, and only then, are we to "resist the devil." The Greek word for "resist" is anthistēmi, which means to stand against, to oppose, to withstand, or to resist. It is the same word used in 1 Peter 5:9, where Peter says, "Resist him, steadfast in the faith." We are to stand against the devil. We are to oppose him. We are to withstand him. But we cannot resist the devil effectively until we have first submitted to God. Submission is the foundation of resistance. You cannot stand against the enemy if you have not first bowed before the Almighty.

And the promise is that when we submit to God and resist the devil, "he will flee from you." The Greek word for "flee" is pheugō, which means to flee, to run away, or to escape. The devil will run. He will escape. He will retreat. He cannot stand against a submitted, resistant believer. He cannot stand against someone who is under the authority of God and standing firm in that authority.

The Apostle Paul echoes this truth in Ephesians 6:13. He writes, "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." The Greek word for "take up" is analambanō, which means to take up, to pick up, or to receive. The word for "whole armor" is panoplia, which means full armor, complete armor, or all the weapons of a heavily armed soldier. The word for "withstand" is anthistēmi, the same word James uses for "resist." The word for "evil day" is hēmera ponēros, which means the evil day, the day of adversity, or the day of attack. The word for "having done all" is katergazomai, which means to accomplish, to complete, to work out, or to finish. The word for "stand" is histēmi, which means to stand, to stand firm, to abide, or to remain.

Paul is saying, "Take up the whole armor of God. Put on every piece. Do not leave anything out. So that you may be able to withstand in the evil day. So that you may be able to stand against the enemy. And having done all—having fought the fight, having run the race, having kept the faith—stand. Stand firm. Stand strong. Stand in the victory."

This teaching is for everyone who wants to stand firm in the battle. It is for the one who has been attacked by the enemy. It is for the one who has been tempted. It is for the one who has been discouraged. It is for the one who has been defeated. It is for the one who needs to learn the divine order of victory. It is time to submit to God. It is time to resist the devil. It is time to stand firm.

Biblical Truth

James 4:7–8 and Ephesians 6:13 together provide a powerful biblical framework for understanding the divine order of spiritual victory. They reveal that we must first submit to God, then resist the devil, and that we must take up the whole armor of God so that we may be able to stand firm in the evil day.

James 4:7–8 is a comprehensive command about spiritual warfare. James writes, "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."

The Greek word for "submit" is hypotassō, which means to arrange under, to subordinate, to place oneself under authority, or to obey. It is a military term. It is the picture of a soldier submitting to his commanding officer. It is the picture of a servant submitting to his master. It is the picture of a child submitting to his father. It is the voluntary placement of oneself under the authority of another. And James says we are to submit to God.

Submission to God is not a popular concept in our culture. We live in an age of independence, self-reliance, and autonomy. We are told to be our own boss, to chart our own course, to determine our own destiny. But the Christian life is not about independence; it is about dependence. It is not about autonomy; it is about submission. It is not about being our own boss; it is about being under God's authority. We must submit to God. We must place ourselves under His authority. We must surrender our will to His will. We must acknowledge Him as Lord.

The promise is that when we submit to God and resist the devil, "he will flee from you." The Greek word for "flee" is pheugō, which means to flee, to run away, or to escape. The devil will run. He will escape. He will retreat. He cannot stand against a submitted, resistant believer. He cannot stand against someone who is under the authority of God and standing firm in that authority. When you submit to God and resist the devil, the devil will flee.

Then James adds, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." The Greek word for "draw near" is engizō, which means to approach, to come near, or to draw close. It is the same word used in Hebrews 4:16, where the writer says, "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." It is the same word used in Hebrews 10:22, where the writer says, "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith." We are to draw near to God. We are to approach Him. We are to come close to Him. And the promise is that He will draw near to us. He will approach us. He will come close to us. He will reveal Himself to us. He will fellowship with us.

Then James gives the command: "Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded." The Greek word for "cleanse" is katharizō, which means to cleanse, to purify, or to make clean. The word for "hands" is cheir, which refers to the hands, the works, or the actions. The word for "sinners" is hamartōlos, which means sinners, transgressors, or those who miss the mark. The word for "purify" is hagnizō, which means to purify, to consecrate, or to sanctify. The word for "hearts" is kardia, which refers to the heart, the inner person, or the seat of the will and emotions. The word for "double-minded" is dipsychos, which means double-minded, wavering, or divided in loyalty.

James is saying, "Cleanse your hands. Purify your hearts. Stop being double-minded. Stop wavering. Stop being divided in your loyalty. Be single-minded. Be wholehearted. Be fully devoted to God." Submission to God requires cleansing. It requires purification. It requires single-minded devotion. You cannot submit to God with dirty hands. You cannot submit to God with a divided heart. You must cleanse your hands. You must purify your hearts. You must be fully devoted to Him.

Ephesians 6:13 expands on this truth. Paul writes, "Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."

The Greek word for "take up" is analambanō, which means to take up, to pick up, or to receive. It is a present tense imperative, indicating ongoing action. We are to continually, deliberately, and intentionally take up the whole armor of God. We are to pick it up. We are to put it on. We are to wear it. It is not optional. It is not a suggestion. It is a command. We must take up the whole armor of God.

The Greek word for "whole armor" is panoplia, which means full armor, complete armor, or all the weapons of a heavily armed soldier. It refers to the complete set of armor that a Roman soldier would wear into battle. It includes the belt, the breastplate, the shoes, the shield, the helmet, and the sword. Paul is saying, "Do not leave anything out. Put on every piece. Put on the whole armor. Do not go into battle partially armed. Do not go into battle half-dressed. Put on the whole armor of God."

The purpose is "that you may be able to withstand in the evil day." The Greek word for "withstand" is anthistēmi, the same word James uses for "resist." The word for "evil day" is hēmera ponēros, which means the evil day, the day of adversity, or the day of attack. The evil day is the day when the enemy attacks. It is the day when temptation comes. It is the day when trials arise. It is the day when opposition intensifies. It is the day when the battle is fierce. And Paul says, "Take up the whole armor of God so that you may be able to withstand in the evil day."

Then Paul adds, "And having done all, to stand." The Greek word for "having done all" is katergazomai, which means to accomplish, to complete, to work out, or to finish. The word for "stand" is histēmi, which means to stand, to stand firm, to abide, or to remain. Paul is saying, "Having done everything—having fought the fight, having run the race, having kept the faith, having resisted the enemy, having stood firm—stand. Stand firm. Stand strong. Stand in the victory. Stand in the power. Stand in the authority. Stand in the name of the Lord."

The principle of submission and standing firm is woven throughout Scripture. When Abraham submitted to God, he stood firm against the temptation to keep Isaac. When Moses submitted to God, he stood firm against Pharaoh. When David submitted to God, he stood firm against Goliath. When Daniel submitted to God, he stood firm against the lions. When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego submitted to God, they stood firm against the fiery furnace. When Esther submitted to God, she stood firm against Haman. When Jesus submitted to the Father, He stood firm against the devil in the wilderness. The pattern is clear: submission to God leads to standing firm against the enemy.

The example of Jesus is our ultimate model. Jesus submitted to the Father completely. He said, "Not My will, but Yours, be done" (Luke 22:42). He said, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work" (John 4:34). He said, "I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things" (John 8:28). Jesus submitted to the Father. And because He submitted to the Father, He stood firm against the devil. He stood firm against temptation. He stood firm against opposition. He stood firm against persecution. He stood firm against the cross. He stood firm against death. He stood firm against the grave. And He calls us to submit to the Father and stand firm against the enemy.

What We Often Get Wrong

The first and most common error is that we try to resist the devil without submitting to God. We want to fight the enemy. We want to stand against the devil. We want to resist temptation. But we have not first submitted to God. We have not placed ourselves under His authority. We have not surrendered our will to His will. We have not acknowledged Him as Lord. And so our resistance is weak. Our resistance is ineffective. Our resistance is futile. We must submit to God first. Submission is the foundation of resistance.

Second, we believe that submission is weakness. We think that submitting to God means being weak, passive, or spineless. We think that submission means losing our identity, losing our freedom, losing our power. But this is a lie from the enemy. Submission is not weakness; it is strength. It is not passivity; it is power. It is not losing your identity; it is finding your identity in Christ. It is not losing your freedom; it is finding true freedom in obedience. It is not losing your power; it is receiving God's power through humility. Submission is the pathway to victory.

Third, we try to stand firm in our own strength. We try to resist the devil in our own power. We try to overcome temptation in our own ability. We try to stand firm in our own might. But Jesus said, "Without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). We cannot resist the devil in our own strength. We cannot overcome temptation in our own ability. We cannot stand firm in our own might. We must stand firm in God's strength. We must stand firm in His power. We must stand firm in His might.

Fourth, we do not put on the whole armor of God. We try to fight the battle without the belt of truth. We try to stand firm without the breastplate of righteousness. We try to resist the enemy without the shield of faith. We try to overcome temptation without the helmet of salvation. We try to defeat the devil without the sword of the Spirit. We try to stand firm without the whole armor. But Paul says, "Take up the whole armor of God." We must put on every piece. We must put on the whole armor.

Fifth, we do not draw near to God. We try to resist the devil without drawing near to God. We try to stand firm without drawing near to God. We try to overcome the enemy without drawing near to God. But James says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." We must draw near to God. We must approach Him. We must come close to Him. We must fellowship with Him. We must abide in Him. And when we draw near to God, He draws near to us. And when He draws near to us, the enemy flees.

Sixth, we do not cleanse our hands or purify our hearts. We try to submit to God with dirty hands. We try to stand firm with divided hearts. We try to resist the devil while holding onto sin. But James says, "Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded." We must cleanse our hands. We must purify our hearts. We must turn from sin. We must turn from double-mindedness. We must be fully devoted to God.

Seventh, we give up before we have done all. We fight for a while. We stand for a while. We resist for a while. But then we give up. We quit. We stop standing. We stop resisting. We stop fighting. But Paul says, "Having done all, to stand." We must do all. We must fight the fight. We must run the race. We must keep the faith. We must resist the enemy. We must stand firm. We must not give up. We must not quit. We must not stop. We must stand.

God's Perspective

God views submission as the pathway to authority. When you submit to God, you place yourself under His authority. And when you are under His authority, you have His authority. You have the authority to resist the devil. You have the authority to stand firm. You have the authority to overcome the enemy. Submission is not the loss of authority; it is the source of authority. When you bow before God, you are lifted up. When you surrender to Him, you are empowered by Him.

God's perspective is that He is your Commander. He is the Commander of the armies of heaven. He is the Captain of your salvation. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He is the one who leads you into battle. He is the one who fights for you. He is the one who gives you the victory. You are not the commander; He is. You are not the general; He is. You are not the king; He is. You must submit to Him. You must obey His orders. You must follow His lead.

God sees your resistance as an act of faith. When you resist the devil, you are demonstrating that you trust God. You are demonstrating that you believe God is greater than the enemy. You are demonstrating that you believe God's Word is true. You are demonstrating that you believe God has already won the victory. Resistance is an act of faith. And God honors faith.

God's perspective is that He has given you the whole armor. He has not left you defenseless. He has not left you vulnerable. He has not left you unprotected. He has given you the belt of truth. He has given you the breastplate of righteousness. He has given you the shoes of the gospel of peace. He has given you the shield of faith. He has given you the helmet of salvation. He has given you the sword of the Spirit. He has given you the whole armor. Put it on. Wear it. Use it. Stand firm in it.

God sees your standing as a testimony to the world. The world is watching you. They are watching to see if your faith is real. They are watching to see if you will stand firm when the enemy attacks. They are watching to see if you will resist the devil when temptation comes. They are watching to see if you will trust God when the battle is fierce. Your standing is a testimony. It is a witness. It is a sermon without words. It speaks louder than anything you could ever say.

God's perspective is that the victory is already won. Jesus defeated the devil on the cross. He disarmed him. He triumphed over him. He rose from the dead. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. He is seated in the heavenly places. He has all authority in heaven and on earth. The victory is already won. The enemy is already defeated. The devil is already on a leash. You are not fighting for victory; you are fighting from victory. You are not fighting to win; you are fighting because you have already won. Stand firm in the victory.
