Introduction

There is a war being fought over your mind. It is not a war of bullets and bombs, but a war of truth and lies. It is not a battle for territory, but a battle for your belief. It is not a conflict of nations, but a conflict of narratives. Every single day, you are bombarded with messages—some true, some false, some partially true, some subtly twisted. And the enemy of your soul is the master of deception. He is the father of lies. He has been lying since the beginning. He lied to Eve in the garden. He lied to Cain. He lied to Saul. He lied to Judas. He lied to Ananias and Sapphira. He is still lying today. And his primary target is your mind.

Jesus exposed the enemy's nature with stunning clarity. He said, "He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it." The Greek word for "murderer" is anthrōpoktonos, which means a murderer, a killer of men, or a destroyer of humanity. The word for "truth" is alētheia, which means truth, reality, or verity. The word for "lie" is pseudos, which means a lie, a falsehood, or a deception. The word for "liar" is pseustēs, which means a liar, a falsifier, or a deceiver. Jesus is saying, "The devil is a murderer. He is a destroyer. He does not stand in the truth. There is no truth in him. He is a liar. He is the father of lies. Lying is his native language. And because the devil is the father of lies, he uses lies to accomplish his murderous purposes. He lies to steal. He lies to kill. He lies to destroy. He lies to deceive. He lies to confuse. He lies to discourage. He lies to divide. He lies to enslave. He lies to keep you from the truth. He lies to keep you from God. He lies to keep you from your destiny.

But God has given us a defense against the lies of the enemy. The Apostle Paul, writing to the Ephesians, describes the armor of God. And the first piece of armor he mentions is the belt of truth. He writes, "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth." The Greek word for "girded" is perizōnnymi, which means to gird, to wrap around, or to tie around. It is the picture of a soldier putting on a belt. In ancient times, a soldier's belt was not just a fashion accessory. It was essential. It held his tunic in place. It held his sword. It held his armor together. Without the belt, the soldier could not fight effectively. Without the belt, he could not stand firm. Without the belt, he was vulnerable.

The belt of truth is the foundation of the armor. It is the first piece. It is the most important piece. Without truth, the rest of the armor does not function. Without truth, righteousness is self-righteousness. Without truth, the gospel of peace is a false peace. Without truth, faith is blind faith. Without truth, salvation is uncertain. Without truth, the Word of God is misused. Truth is the foundation. Truth is the belt. Truth is what holds everything together.

This teaching is for everyone who wants to stand firm in the battle. It is for the one who has been deceived by the lies of the enemy. It is for the one who has believed the wrong voices. It is for the one who needs to know the truth. It is time to know the truth. It is time to believe the truth. It is time to speak the truth. It is time to walk in the truth. Second, we believe the lies of the enemy. The enemy is the father of lies. He whispers to us, "You are worthless. You are unlovable. You are a failure. You are beyond redemption. You are not enough. God does not love you. God has abandoned you. God has forgotten you. You cannot trust God. You cannot trust anyone. You are alone. You are hopeless. You are a lost cause." And we believe him. We accept his lies as truth. We define ourselves by his accusations. We live as if his lies are true. But we must not believe the lies. We must reject them. We must replace them with the truth of God's Word.

Third, we confuse feelings with facts. We think that if we feel worthless, we must be worthless. If we feel unloved, we must be unloved. If we feel like a failure, we must be a failure. We let our feelings dictate our reality. But feelings are not facts. They are not reliable indicators of reality. The truth is not determined by how we feel; it is determined by what God has said. And God has said you are loved. God has said you are forgiven. God has said you are redeemed. God has said you are His. Feelings are not facts. The Word of God is the truth.

Fourth, we believe the traditions of men over the Word of God. We believe what our parents told us. We believe what our culture tells us. We believe what our teachers told us. We believe what our friends tell us. We believe what the media tells us. We believe what the world tells us. And we accept these things as truth, even when they contradict the Word of God. But the Word of God is the truth. The Word of God is the standard. The Word of God is the plumb line. Everything else must be measured against it. Everything else must be tested against it. Everything else must be submitted to it.

Fifth, we do not speak the truth in love. We either speak the truth without love, which is brutality. Or we speak love without truth, which is sentimentality. We must speak the truth in love. We must speak the truth with grace. We must speak the truth with kindness. We must speak the truth with compassion. We must speak the truth in love.

Sixth, we do not walk in the truth. We know the truth. We believe the truth. We speak the truth. But we do not walk in the truth. We do not live the truth. We do not obey the truth. We do not practice the truth. We must walk in the truth. We must live the truth. We must obey the truth. We must practice the truth.

Practical Application

You must let it dwell in you richly. The more you know the Word, the more you will know the truth. The more you know the truth, the more you will be able to discern the lies of the enemy.

Test Everything Against the Word: Do not believe everything you hear. Do not accept everything you are told. Do not assume that every voice is from God. Test everything against the Word. Ask yourself, "Is this consistent with Scripture? Is this consistent with God's character? Is this consistent with God's purposes?" If it is not, reject it. If it is, receive it.

Reject the Lies of the Enemy: When the enemy whispers lies to you, reject them. Speak the truth of God's Word over your life. Say, "I am not worthless. I am a child of God. I am not a failure. I am forgiven. I am not unloved. I am loved with an everlasting love. I am not abandoned. God will never leave me nor forsake me." Do not give the enemy a foothold. Reject his lies.
