IS THE DEVIL A MUSICAL ANGEL?
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Can Satan sing? Does the devil have any musical talents? Can an angel, in general, only praise God?
a) They devil is a VERY real spirit being who is powerful. He is God's adversary. In fact, the word Satan used in the Bible means adversary, enemy and accuser. We read the words of Jesus in John 12:31 regarding the devil's authority.
i) "Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out."
b) The apostle Paul confirmed, several times, the authority and influence of the devil in this world and his angels (2 Corinthians 4:4, Ephesians 2:2).
c) The devil influences what we hear from the air, meaning what is broadcast over radio, television, movies (even the Internet). And, it does not matter whether it is spoken, sung or suggested. He certainly does have musical talent, but it is a twisted to create music that is destructive (especially self-destructive), degrading, obscene and anything else that opposes God's way. Be careful what you hear or sing.
d) About angels, let us look at Job 38.
i) To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars (which included Lucifer, before he became Satan) SANG together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
e) The word "stars" is Strong's Concordance #3556 and in this context is another way of saying angels. Both the Jamieson, Fausset, Brown and Matthew Henry commentaries confirm that "morning stars" as used in this verse are indeed referring to angelic beings. Revelation 1:20 also uses the word stars to represent angels (Revelation 1:20).
f) Yes, angels do sing. But all this begs one question. Should WE sing songs to God? YES!
g) Let's take a brief look at Paul's book to the Ephesians and Luke's account of his ministry to see how important music is in the life of a Christian.
i) Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. (Ephesians 5:19)
ii) But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. (Acts 16:25)
h) The book of Psalms is a book of songs or musical compositions on many diverse topics, such as worship, jubilation, praise, lament, Messianic prophecies, judgment, etc., all set to music. God fully desires and expects that we sing songs to him and about him as long as the angels praise him.
