WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT FALSE PROPHETS?

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. What does the Bible say about false prophets?

a) The Bible has many things to say about those who teach lies. Jesus gave us warning about how these teachers come to us in disguise, seeming to be gentle creatures when they are, in fact, very dangerous people (Matthew 7:15).

b) Christ himself told us that we can detect who are false prophets by their fruits, meaning by what they teach compared to the Bible (Matthew 7:16).

c) True prophets ultimately lead people to God, while those who are false lead others to THEMSELVES and to increasing their own power, glory and wealth (1Timothy 6:5, 10, 2Peter 2:3).

d) True prophets speak the complete truth and WANT people to prove out their words in the Bible and to 'test the spirits' (1John 4:1). Those who are not true, however, tell a whole bunch of lies and half-truths, mixed with just enough truth to seem credible (see 2Peter 2:1). Their ultimate authority is themselves (1Timothy 6:3 - 5).

e) True prophets are not concerned with what people think of them or whether others do not like to hear what God has to say to them. Prophets that are phonies are very concerned about their image and greatly desire to have the admiration and respect of the people.

f) With true prophets "what you see is what you get." They do not pretend to be something they are not and do not seek to deceive people. They serve out of love. False prophets masquerade and pretend to represent God and want people to believe their motives are purely altruistic (see 2Corinthians 11:12 - 14, Philippians 1:15 - 18). In their hearts, however, they pursue totally selfish goals and use people as if they were disposal to get what they DEMAND.

g) Prophets that have not come from God teach doctrines calculated to destroy others, while those God has truly inspired and sent speak to build people up and to warn them so that they can repent, change, and draw closer to God.

h) In closing, the book of Deuteronomy states how serious a matter it is for someone to be a false prophet and how Israel was to punish them for their evil deeds.

i) 5 But put to death any interpreters of dreams or prophets that tell you to rebel against the Lord, who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves. Such people are evil and are trying to lead you away from the life that the Lord has commanded you to live. They must be put to death, in order to rid yourselves of this evil. (Deuteronomy 13:5 - 6)
