Musical Instruments and the Bible

a) In the Bible, musical instruments were made from a variety of available materials. Instruments were created using Brass (1Corinthians 13:1), fir wood (2Samuel 6:5), Juniper wood (1Kings 10:12), silver (Numbers 10:2) and the horns of animals (Joshua 6:8).

b) The instruments themselves that were used to make music included Cymbals (1Chronicles 15:19, 28), Flutes (Daniel 3:5, 7), Harps (Isaiah 38:20; Habakkuk 3:19), Dulcimers (double pipe - Daniel 3:5, 15), Trumpets (Joshua 6:4 - 6), Timbrels (which is like a tambourine - Exodus 15:20, Job 21:12), Lyres (Isaiah 5:12; Amos 5:23) and Viols (Isaiah 5:12). The general types of instruments made included those with strings, those that utilized air (wind instruments), and those classified as percussion (i.e. drums).

c) King David personally made several instruments (2Chronicles 7:1, 6, Amos 6:5) and well as his son King Solomon (Ecclesiastes 2:8, 1Kings 10:12; 2Chronicles 9:11).

The End ...
