REST ANOINTING FOR WEARY & BURDENED

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) On Saturday 31.03.2012 the Lord showed me a picture of an eagle when I was in Singapore. I did not search the scripture for it but I was reminded by the Lord a few times on it during the early hours the next day. Then I said to myself that I must search the scripture for the 'eagle'. So Sunday 01.04.2012 early morning I prepared this scripture texts for the Pastor-in-charge of a church in Tampines, Singapore and his wife:

Isaiah 40:28-31
 28 Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
    and his understanding no one can fathom.
29 He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.

1. What does weary and burdened mean?

a) Weary - exhausted of strength, endurance, vigor, vision.

b) Burdened - that which is borne physically or spiritually.

2. What does rest mean?

a) It means to be at ease or at peace; inactivity after work; a period of inactivity; cessation of work.

3. What is rest anointing?

a) It is God given power (anointing) that enable us to be at ease or at peace or take relief (release or cease from work or duty).

b) Sometimes we are not at ease or at peace or take relief from work or duty. We work and work and at times 7 days a week and do not allow our bodies to rest or at ease or dis-ease. Thus we allow disease and sickness to come to our bodies.

c) Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 that he will give rest to the weary and burdened if we come to him.

Matthew 11:28
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

4. What was God's idea of rest in the beginning?

Genesis 2:2-3
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

a)  Holy means set aside for sacred use; sanctified; purified.

b) Seventh means completeness or perfection.

Exodus 31:15
15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death.

a) Sabbath begins on Friday evening @6pm and ends on Saturday evening @6pm.

Leviticus 23:3
“‘There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord.

5. What must we do with regard to the Sabbath?

a) To remember and keep it holy.

Exodus 20:8-11
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

b) To observe the Sabbath and keep it holy.

Deuteronomy 5:12-15
12 “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

6. Whom do we rest in?

a) The Lord.

Psalm 37:7
Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.

7. Why rest is so important?

Isaiah 28:11-12
11 Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues
    God will speak to this people,
12 to whom he said,
    “This is the resting place, let the weary rest”;
and, “This is the place of repose”—
    but they would not listen.

Acts 3:19
19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

a) Times of refreshing: restoring, reviving and renewing.

Psalm 85:4
Restore us again, God our Savior,
    and put away your displeasure toward us.

Psalm 85:6
Will you not revive us again,
    that your people may rejoice in you?

Isaiah 40:31
31 but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.

8. Who need rest?

a) VIP like King David.

Psalm 55:6
I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest.

a) This psalm 55 was mostly written during the time of Absalom's rebellion and his advisor, Ahithophel's betrayal (2 Samuel 15 - 17). Even those who are especially a close to God, as David was, have moments when the want to escape from their problems and pressures. Do you feel like that?

b) Ordinary people

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

9. What does Scripture say about the promise of rest?

Psalm 95:6-11
Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
“Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
    as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

a) In Psalm 95:11 God said, "So I declared on oath (swore) in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'

b) God had given the Israelites the opportunity to enter Canaan, but they disobeyed and failed to enter (Numbers 13,14). Now God offers us the opportunity to enter his ultimate place of rest - he invites us to come to Christ. To enter his rest, you must believe that God has this relationship in mind for you; you must stop trying to create it; you must trust in Christ for it; and must determine to obey him.

c) In Psalm 95:7-8, God also said, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart as you did in the rebellion."

d) God wants us to enter his rest. For the Israelites of Moses time, this rest was the earthly rest to be found in the Promised Land. For us, it is peace with God now and eternal life on new earth later. We do not need to wait for the next life to enjoy God's rest and peace; we may have it daily now! Our daily rest in the Lord will not end with death, but will become an eternal rest in the place that Christ is preparing for us (John 14:1-4).

John 14:1-4
14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

e) Today is the best time to find peace with God. Tomorrow may be too late.

10. What are the promises of earthy place of rest in the Promised Land?

a) A land flowing with milk and honey.

Exodus 3:7-8
The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

b) A land with large, flourishing cities that we did not build.

Deuteronomy 6:10-12
10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

c) A land of fruitfulness.

Deuteronomy 7:13
13 He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your womb, the crops of your land—your grain, new wine and olive oil—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

d) A good land of abundance.

Deuteronomy 8:7-9
For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

e) A land that the Lord personally cares for.

Deuteronomy 11:11-12
11 But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. 12 It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.

f) A land that produces wonderful crops.

Deuteronomy 11:14-15
14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. 15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

11. Prayer focus

a) Pray for those who are weary (exhausted of strength, endurance, vigor, vision) and heavy burdened so that they find rest for their souls. Also, the Lord to give them times of refreshing - restoring, reviving and renewing.

b) Pray for those who want to enjoy God's rest and peace. And also to receive the promises of earthly rest.

The End...
