A KISS OF BETRAYAL
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) A kiss of betrayal
i) 47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.” (Luke 22:47-53 NIV)
1. What is the text all about?
a) A kiss was and still is the traditional greeting among men in certain parts of the world. In this case, it was also the agreed-upon signal to point out Jesus.
i) 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” (Matthew 26:48 NIV)
b) It is ironic that a gesture of greeting would be the means of betrayal. It was a hollow gesture because of Judas' treachery. Have any of your religious practices become empty gestures. We still betray Christ when our acts of service or giving are insincere or carried out merely for show.
c) We learn from the Gospel of John that the man who cut off the servant's ear was Peter.
i) 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant (Malchus), cutting off his right ear. (John 18:10 NIV)
d) The religious leaders had not arrested Jesus in the temple for fear of a riot. Instead, they came secretly at night, under the influence of the prince of darkness, Satan himself. Although it looked as if Satan was getting the upper hand, everything was proceeding according to God's pan. It was time for Jesus to die.
2. Prayer focus
a) Pray that we would not betray Christ through our acts of service or giving which are insincere or carried out merely for show.
