SPIRITUAL HERITAGE (3)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Train your children unto godliness

a) 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. (1 Timothy 4:7 NIV)

b) Godliness is never a result of chance but the fruits of consistent cultivation.

i) Develop godly characters

@1. The fruit of the Spirit. "22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV)

@2. Characters are the moral excellence that radiates from our lives as we obey God's word.

#1) Teach them the word of God to obey God's commandments.

i) 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:7-9 NIV)

#2) Correct them when they are wrong.

#3) Discipline and godly chastisements, when they disobey or rebel.

i) 15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away. (Proverbs 22:15 NIV)

ii) 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. (Hebrews 12:5-10 NIV)

#4) Teach the various characters of Christ.

i) Praise or reward them when they demonstrate those godly characters.
