SPIRITUAL HERITAGE (4)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Give your children a heritage of a stable loving family
a) 5 “See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” (Malachi 4:5-6 NIV)
#1) Husbands love your wives
@1. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. (Ephesians 5:25 NIV)
@2. 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. (1 Peter 3:7 NIV)
i) A man cannot truly the children without loving the mother of his children
ii) Exclusive lifelong commitment to your wife - no divorce. God hates divorce.
iii) 14 You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. 15 Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth. 16 “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful. (Malachi 2:14-16 NIV)
#2) Fathers turn your hearts towards your children
@1. 3 Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. 4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. 5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court. (Psalms 127:35 NIV)
i) Your success is measured in them.
ii) Do not reject your children. Welcome them, love them.
iii) Fulfill your responsibilities of a father towards your children. "11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:11-13 NIV
- provide, protect, teach, direct, correct, and reward etc.
- spiritual leadership in the home.
#3) Give your children a rich family culture and a museum of memories
#4) Pray for them, that your God, the God of your fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will also reveal himself personally to them, that they themselves will then call upon the Lord and be saved
@1. 13“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:13 NIV)
2. Prayer focus
a) Pray for your children so that when they grow up they will have a personal encounter with the Lord.
