LASTING HERITAGE (1)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) The potential of a will goes far beyond the disposal of property. To be done correctly, a will requires much thought, prayer and preparation. A will can be a carefully compiled document, drawn from what God has taught us over the years and what we want our family to learn for years to come.

b) God gave us two "wills" when he gave us the Old and New Testaments. They contain history, chronology, practical instruction and future direction. Likewise, we must design a will that will preserve and transmit faith, characters, wisdom, money, possession and experience which God has given us to the generations after us.

1. Biblical example of instructive will and pronouncement of blessings

a) Abraham's blessings

i) Before Abraham died, he gave gifts to the other sons that he had after Isaac, and sent them away from Isaac to live in the East.

@1. 5 Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. 6 But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east. (Genesis 25:5-6 NIV)

ii) Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac . (see Genesis 25:5 NIV)

b) Isaac's blessings

i) Isaac pronounced his 'firstborn blessing' which Jacob stole.

@1. 28 May God give you heaven’s dew and earth’s richnessan abundance of grain and new wine.
29 May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.” (Genesis 27:28-29 NIV)

ii) Isaac's blessing upon Esau

@1. 39 His father Isaac answered him, “Your dwelling will be away from the earth’s richness, away from the dew of heaven above. 40 You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck.” (Genesis 27:39-40 NIV)

The End ...
