SPIRITUAL HERITAGE (2)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Train your children unto godliness
a) 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. (1 Timothy 4:7 NIV)
b) Godliness is never a result of chance but the fruits of consistent cultivation.
i) Develop biblical disciplines
@1. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:27 NIV)
@2. Spiritual disciplines make a person a disciple of Christ - "a disciplined one". Our ability to live by biblical disciplines comes not from our strength but from God's grace. John Wesley said, "Do not seek after a ministry; anticipate the fruits of a disciplined life." Our greatest asset is the blessing of the Lord, and God promises to bless openly any man who will diligently carry out biblical disciplines. It will cause our children to fear the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:2 NIV says, "2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
#1) Rising early
i) 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. (Proverbs 8:17 NIV)
#2) Daily bible reading
i) 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 NIV)
ii) 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. (1 Peter 2:2 NIV)
iii) 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. (Romans 10:17 NIV)
#3) Scripture memorization
i) 11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (Psalms 119:11 NIV)
#4) Scripture meditation
i) 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8 NIV)
#5) Fervent prayer
i) 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. (James 5:16 NIV)
ii) 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:6 NIV)
#6) Regular fasting
i) 4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5 Then I said: “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
#7) Tithing and giving
i) 8 “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. (Malachi 3:8-11 NIV)
#8) Keeping the Sabbath
i) 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (Exodus 20:8-11 NIV)
